JME, I am engaged in the 2008 Pushup Challenge and am enjoying it. Now I want to add chin-ups to my workout to build up biceps. But, I am woefully weak on chin-ups. Can you suggest a protocol to build up chin-up numbers?

NoBite,

Several ideas come to mind:

1) BodyRows
(High volume sets; High intensity [get your feet up high], low reps; pyramids; ladders; etc.)

2) Hanging Chin-ups
(These will build your biceps by themselves. Get your chin over the bar and hang as long as possible. Take a couple of days rest between training sessions with these.)

3) DVR Chinups
(Grab a broomstick or imaginary bar and tense your biceps, shoulders, lats, etc. HARD and simulate a chinup. Perform for 3-5 reps x 3-5 sets.)

Hope these help.

THANKS! Actually, I have a problem with something pulled in my right elbow area that complicates my quest. I believe both the DVR Chinups and the Hanging Chinups will work for me. A couple of months ago we loaded a great many bales of hay from a field into our barn. They were heavy bales and I tweaked something in my right elbow that still bothers me. No issues at all for the pushups, but hurts even to perform a firm handshake! Getting older is challenging at times.
